Mother-In-Law’s Cottage / ADU – Boone, NC

An architect built an ADU for his mother-in-law next to his house using Eco-Panel wall and roof panels.

An architect built an ADU (at right) for his mother-in-law next to his home (at left) in Boone NC using Eco-Panels with pre-installed LP Smartside exterior sheathing. Both walls and roof panels were 6.5″ thick (R40 insulation).

Per the builder / architect / homeowner:

The Vana [Tescon] tape is amazing. I did all of the air sealing and joint sealing myself and after working with it, I have a new appreciation for European building science products. The primer is an extra step but once the tape is applied to a primed surface it is very hard to get off. I used a flangeless window install which I think I now prefer over flanged windows, but which also confused the siding guys, window installers, and even my painter!

Tescon makes a 2 3/8″ tape which is perfectly covered using 1×3 Smartside batten strips, nailed directly to the ecopanel. You just need to ensure they get installed accurately to match the batten spacing. We did need to trim some of the tape in a few spots where it wasn’t perfectly covered by the battens. My painter did this and said it took about an extra hour of work over the course of caulking and painting.
